THE QUESTION
There is a lot to be learned through exchange between China and New Zealand on the conservation of natural and cultural resources. How might the story of New Zealand’s protected areas be shared in ways that can foster ongoing opportunities for learning?
THE OUTCOME
In September 2017 Lincoln University brought the story of the national parks of Aotearoa New Zealand to Beijing, China. This exhibition was hosted at the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture and shows the ways the National Park idea has evolved over the last 130 years in Aotearoa New Zealand. The exhibition received nearly 50,000 visitors and was welcomed by professionals, general public and society.

Exhibition Opening

On 16th September, 2017, “Aotearoa New Zealand – The Story of New Zealand’s National Parks” officially opened in the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture.

Exchange of gifts and stories

Exchange of gifts between the director of the museum and Teoti Jardine, the display of Pounamu and a full giant Moa skeleton being publicly displayed in China for the first time.

Immersive Stories and Interactive Experiences

A series of interactive displays and exhibits helped visitors engage and immerse in the rich cultural, natural and environmental stories of Aotearoa’s National Parks.

Symposium and Ongoing Learning and Research opportunities

On 17th September, 2017, The “China-New Zealand National Park Symposium” was held in the Beijing Forestry University, and was co-held by the Museum of Chinese Gardens and Landscape Architecture, Lincoln University and Tsinghua University.
